BiH Minister of Communications and Transport, Vojin Mitrović, attended the inauguration of the interstate Svilaj bridge over the Sava River which is one of the Ministry’s strategic projects.

Chair of the BiH Council of Ministers, Zoran Tageltija, together with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, Andrej Plenković, officially opened the interstate bridge over the Sava River near Svilaj. The opening was also attended by the Republic of Croatia Minister of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Oleg Butković, as well as a number of other guests.

“To the satisfaction of both sides and the EU, the border crossing and the bridge over the Sava River were officially opened, which will connect the Corridor Vc motorway, both on the BiH and the Croatian side. This bridge is an important link on the international Pan-European Road Corridor Vc (Budapest – Beli Manastir – Osijek – Sarajevo – Ploče), as part of the motorway network connecting the North of Europe with the Adriatic Sea and is closely connected to the Corridor X motorway, thus facilitating and accelerating the transport of passengers. The residents of this area will mostly benefit from opening of the bridge as the traffic congestions will be reduced to a large extent. Approvals for transport of goods are expected in the following period given that, according to the interim decision, the Svilaj border crossing will be an international border crossing for transport of passengers until the end of the year” said Minister Mitrović.

Bilateral meeting between the delegation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, headed by the CM Chair Tageltija with the participation of the Minister Mitrović, and the Delegation of Croatia, headed by the Prime Minister Plenković, preceded the opening of the bridge.

The total value of the works amounted to Eur. 23,230,582.87 (VAT excluded), covered by Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Croatia in equal shares (50% each).

This significant project would not have been possible without the assistance from the European Union and the grant award mechanism. To finance the construction of the bridge and implementing the project through the BiH Ministry of Communications and Transport, Bosnia and Herzegovina used funds paid for the universal telecommunications system licenses as well as the WBIF and EIB investment grants.
