Principal Deputy HR Scanlan expressed readiness to maximise the assistance in the implementation of these projects as well as in talks with the Republic of Croatia, emphasising full support for the construction of a new Brčko-Gunja bridge that would serve as a transitional solution until the construction of a new bridge.
Minister Mitrović informed PD HR Scanlan that the precondition for all of these activities was the signing of the Agreement between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Croatia on the Maintenance and Reconstruction of Road Bridges according to which one of the priorities is the reconstruction of this bridge. The ultimate goal of the BD is the construction of a new parallel bridge for which both Gunja and Brčko are interested.
Minister Mitrović also noted on the interest of the Minister of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Croatia, Oleg Butković, to visit the Brčko District in order to agree on the specific details of the bridge that will also serve for cargo carriage.
The construction of a new bridge and revitalisation of the Sava riverbed, including its demining, is a precondition for putting into operation the Port of Brčko. That would also include functioning of the Sava river navigability towards the Danube, thereby providing full operation of the Port.
In the end, they both agreed that construction of the Sarajevo – Belgrade motorway, which stretches along the Belgrade – Rača – Bijeljina – Brčko – Tuzla – Žepče – Sarajevo route, is key for the economic development in the Brčko District.
