BiH Minister of Communications and Transport, Vojin Mitrović, opened today in Sarajevo a two-day workshop titled “Transport‐related SDGs and Road Safety System” organized by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in BiH and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

Addressing the workshop participants, Minister Mitrović said that gathering the representatives from the competent institutions from all levels of government as well as international and domestic road traffic safety experts is the introduction to the Ministry’s activities on the development of the BiH Road Transport Safety Framework Strategy and the Action Plan for 2021 – 2025, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Thanking the UNDP and UNECE representatives for organising this Workshop, Minister Mitrović recalled that the Sustainable Development Goals represent the universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people live in peace and prosperity. In this regard, Minister Mitrović said that sustainable transport is crucial to meeting most of the Sustainable Development Goals, especially the objectives relating to health, energy, infrastructure, cities and communities.

The UNDP Resident Representative in BiH, Steliana Nedera, also addressed the Workshop participants underlining the necessity to take actions regarding the road safety in BiH, given the fact that, as she pointed out, some 300 lives are lost annually due to road accidents in our country.

According to Ms. Nedera, the goal is quite clear: to prevent the loss of human lives in road traffic. At the same time, Ms. Nedera said that, by improving road safety, we will improve the safety of communities and reduce the significant social and economic burden caused by road accidents.

Director of BiH Directorate for Economic Planning, Zdenko Milinović, Director of RS Agency for Traffic Safety, Novica Krunić, and UNECE Regional Advisor, Nenad Nikolić, also addressed the participants at the workshop.

During the workshop which aims to strengthen the relevant institutions in BiH in meeting the transport-related Sustainable Development Goals and improving the current road safety situation in BiH, together with international and regional experts, the participants will exchange information and experience on information gathering to meet the SDGs and to develop BiH Road Transport Safety Framework Strategy.
